KPK (the Indonesian Anti Graft Body) gave up. It finally accepted Government Regulation in lieu of law (Peraturan Pemerintah Pengganti Undang-undang or PERPU). As Kompas reported, Associate Chairmen of KPK Mr. Jasin confirmed their decision to accept President SBY's decision. This may be a smart decision in light of SBY's powerful stance.
Many lawyers and NGO rejected the issuance of the PERPU for lack of constitutional basis. However, as I wrote in Indonesian, it is the power of President to issue a PERPU due to Indonesian Parliament (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat or DPR) vacancy during Idul Fitri. The PERPU will be reviewed at the next session of DPR If DPR agrees then the PERPU will be passed as an act. If DPR fails to agree the PERPU then it will be null and void.
By now the President is in a position to refresh the KPK and to inject people at his choices to fill the vacancies in KPK. As we all know, the chairman of KPK is suspected in murder case. Two associates chairmen are also suspected and still in investigation stage. Public knows that the last police investigation is the fruit of power battle between Prosecutor (Kejaksaan)/The Police and the KPK.
